A YOUNG PERSON'S HISTORY OF

THORNHAM IN THE 70S (1 of 2)

PRESS ON THE ABOVE BUTTON TO GO BACK TO THE HOMEPAGE WHERE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO NAVIGATE TO OTHER PAGES ON THIS SITE

The hard work for this page was done way back in the early 1970s when Mandy Sadler was studying for her C.S.E.s at Hunstanton Secondary Modern School, now known as Smithdon High.  The contents on this page were all correct at the time.  For those of you that have known the village for a long time, you should find comparing facts and figures of the 70s with today's facts and figures very interesting.  Also on this page are newspaper cuttings from the same period, some of these will bring back memories of people and events that have long ceased to be a memory.  Any typing you see on this page in black will be information taken directly from Mandy's work, any in red will be comments added.  Enjoy this page and a big thank you to Mandy for allowing me to copy her folder, in years to come I honestly believe this folder will be a valuable document in the history of

Thornham

A small seaside village on the East coast 6 miles North East of Hunstanton.  Much of the village is along the main road (A149) and the buildings are made of flint and chalk.  New buildings which which are mainly holiday makers holiday homes are built inland.

Population of Thornham is 507, much of which are elderly people.

A very quiet village during the winter, cold winds come from the North, over the sea, bringing rain and mist.  A noisy village during during the summer with visitors from all over England, but mainly from Leicester.  The old historical buildings such as the Church, the Coal barn, the Manor, the Hall and the Granneries give the village an old fashioned character. Still there is one man who rides in a Pony & Trap.

Many of the local people are farm workers and and the Norfolk accent can still be heard

Although Thornham is on the East coast it actually faces North, Hunstanton is on the East coast and faces West, the only beach resort in the country to do so

Sadly the Norfolk accent is in decline in this area, as Norfolk people leave the villages and new people move in the accent is being lost

This Church is dedicated to All Saint's and is built of flint and chalk in the early English and perpendicular style of architecture.  It was built in the 13th centaury.  The chancel was rebuilt in 1877 together with the East end of the nave and aisles and in 1898 the nave roof was restored.  Later the aisle roofs leaked so badly that only the chancel was available for services, but temporary roof was placed over the tower (begun in 1635 and left unfinished but completed in 1935 in its present form to commemorate the Jubilee of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary) a new floor (in the Church) the aisle restored and re-leaded, the porch rebuilt, the font reset with 3 steps, and a new organ given.  The clock in the tower commemorates the coronation King George V  The screen is 15th centaury and was laying in a yard for a considerable time and as a result much damage was done to it

The above picture shows a young girl sitting down, this is Winifred Moore, daughter of the Rev Moor vicar of this parish 1907, photo taken 17.09.1908

It is not know for sure who the lady is standing up but going by the dress it could well be the Rev Moor's wife
